I’m fairly certain that I’ve said this before, but it’s very rare to find a game based on a movie that’s quite enjoyable to play and rather well put together, both in terms of presentation and gameplay mechanics. Alice in wonderland - Alice slays the jabberwocky. Alice in wonderland - down the rabbit hole.

Used together, the two distinct sounds of the score make clear the theme of the film one of daring adventure and imaginative thirst.įrauenfelder, K., Frey, D., Lebenzon, C., Peitzman, T., Richards, M., Roth, J., Tobyansen, P., Todd, J., Todd, S., Zanuck, R. On the other hand, much of the score in the film also feels dark and ominous, emitting a sense of underlying danger.

Particularly adding to the theme of the film, the score that plays while Alice runs to the rabbit hole, and subsequently falls down it, is full of adventure and promises the audience that something exciting and wondrous is about to happen. When creating a film that involves mystical worlds and creatures, exaggeratedly loud sounds are to be expected, and only help establish the genre. When Alice is in the real world, the score has an old-fashioned English (proper) feel, and helps the audience feel like they are living in the timeframe of the film’s setting, though that changes once she enters Underland.Īs this is a fantasy film, the overall sound is mostly exaggerated, such as the sound effects depicting mystical creatures. The score, most usually played by a full symphonic orchestra, is music that can be heard in the background (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011), and is the type of music Danny Elfman uses in Alice in Wonderland. Alice in Wonderland does have a soundtrack of songs inspired by the film, such as the song ‘Alice’ sung by Avril Lavigne (2010), but those songs are not directly used in the film. The soundtrack is a selection of songs or dialogue used in the film (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). Once sound was incorporated into movies, music became just as critical to filmmaking as lighting and cameras (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011).

Music in itself has a magnetic quality that appeals to emotions and really draws people in. The music in a film can be the most captivating of all sound techniques used, though it may often be recognizable only on a sub-conscious level. If sound effects were to be ignored while making this scene, one would be unable to feel the full effect of the danger Alice is about to face in attempting to slay him, while also missing that ‘wow’ effect. Also noteworthy in this film is the battle scene between Alice and the Jabberwocky, where the Jabberwocky emits screeches similar to what one might associate with a dragon or dinosaur. Although the audience cannot see any birds, the sound effect is diegetic because the birds are a part of the film world. Alice in Wonderland features sound effects from nature, such as birds chirping while Alice is in the garden during her engagement party. Sound effects can range from bone-rattling explosions (varying in meaning depending on the film), and mechanical noises, to more subdued sounds like nature and the soft murmuring of crowds in attempts to draw in the audience. Sound effects are used to reiterate or add to the story of a film, and are usually recorded separately to be added to the film in post-production (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011). The dialogue in this particular film is also full of silly, nonsensical banter between the characters. In Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010), nearly every character has an accent, and most of the humans in the real world speak in a relaxed tone. Sound is an essential component to how the audience interprets films, and even in the days of ‘silent films,’ music was incorporated to aid the audience in deciphering the intended mood (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011).ĭialogue is, most simply put, characters talking to one another in a film (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011), though it also refers to voice-overs (not used in this film) of either diegetic (represented from within the film world) or non-diegetic (outside of the film world) characters. In film, there are three basic categories of sound that contribute to the overall theme and mood: dialogue, sound effects, and music.
